Challenge
PNH, a rare blood disorder characterized by the destruction of red blood cells, blood clots, and impaired bone marrow function, presents challenges for patients to monitor their disease, as well as the importance of adhering to their treatment.
Approach
With our patient-first approach, we closely collaborated with patients and our customer, Novartis. By listening to patients and incorporating their input throughout the process, we designed a solution that reflects their lived experiences and priorities.
Result
Delivered to market at speed, Ekiva PNH is a solution tailored to the specific needs of the PNH patient population, offering enhanced functionalities, such as disease specific symptom logging and disease management tools for supporting bespoke care.

Challenge
As a rare blood disorder, PNH presents patients with unique challenges.
Due to the complexity of PNH as a rare chronic disease, patients face challenges that demand bespoke solutions and the need to closely track their condition. The treatment requires a complex schedule and regular visits to the healthcare team, meaning we needed to provide a tool to support them in navigating everyday life.
As patients with PNH often experience extreme symptoms such as fatigue and challenges with their concentration and memory, we needed to ensure the product design was highly accessible through its ease of use and trustworthy content, without overwhelming the user or requiring too much of them.
Approach
Elevating the patient voice through co-creation and uncovering insights.
Through patient and patient advocate interviews and research conducted at the beginning of the discovery, we are able to truly empathize with patients and use these insights to ensure a product that met their needs and best supported them. This co-creation with PNH patients and advocates continued throughout the product design and development process, alongside ongoing collaboration with Novartis to ensure Ekiva met their business needs as our customer.
Utilizing The Dawn Platform, we are able to accelerate delivery to market through pre-existing modules, while building capabilities and features that ensure patient needs are met. For example, ongoing symptom logging and inputting lab values, as we learnt through our research the importance of these features for patients and their healthcare teams.

Ekiva PNH is a user-centric, engaging and easy to use solution that offers patients a supportive tool for their daily life in managing their disease. Empowering them with the tools to take ownership of their disease management, the app provides them with educational content to be better informed of the condition and tips to help with symptoms, as well as logging capabilities for their unique experience with PNH. By having the capability to log and export symptoms, how they are feeling and their lab values into a report, they are able to have better, data-driven conversations with their healthcare team to help improve health outcomes.
Through our expertise and technical setup, Ekiva PNH was delivered to its first markets in a matter of months. The Dawn Platform enables us to deliver products to market in such a short time through pre-built concepts, regulatory documentation ready to go and expert teams building products in collaboration with our pharma partners.
Key features
Symptoms & lab values logging
A key part of Ekiva PNH and the benefits it brings users is the symptom logging and insights provided. By logging their symptoms, users are able to see how they change or progress over time and gain a better understanding of their own disease experience.
Alongside symptom logging, Ekiva PNH also includes quality of life logging, meaning patients can see how they have been feeling over time outside of the disease symptoms. PNH patients also regularly have their lab values measured and because of this part of their complex treatment schedule, the app also includes a logging feature for this to keep record of these values.
Personal reports & consultation support
To empower patients in their conversations with their healthcare team, Ekiva PNH enables them to export and share reports of their symptom and quality of life tracking to take to their appointments. Having this historical data means they can have more informed, data-driven discussions about their condition and treatment, without having to remember how they have felt over many months.
Users can also input their upcoming appointments to the app to help keep all the information regarding their PNH in one place. Whether a consultation or blood transfusion, users can keep an ordered calendar of their upcoming appointments to help them manage their schedule and daily life.
Educational content & support
As a rare chronic condition, educational content and support for PNH is key and a useful tool for patients. While each person’s experience is unique, there are shared experiences in living with PNH. Ekiva PNH has many in-app articles and educational content that users can read in their own time to help them in their daily life and provide support for the symptoms they may be experiencing.
